Trials - Competitive off road events for all

What are they?

Members drive a “section” marked with pairs of canes, trying not to hit the canes or stop. Sounds easy? Come along and have a go!

The Course

The course of the trial is divided into Sections which are marked by pairs of numbered canes known as gates to define the route; the gates are numbered from 12 down to 1, so a Section has 12 gates and we try to drive 10 – 12 Sections on the day. These are driving events where competitors attempt to drive their vehicles through a dozen gates without touching any of them or stopping which would mean you score, hit a 5 gate and score 5 the idea is to clear the Section and get a zero score. The lowest score of the day when all the Sections are driven wins. Sounds easy but the ground used is often hilly, bumpy, muddy, sandy, gravely or partially flooded and will challenge any driver. The events are not timed and are NOT about speed, as slow as possible as fast as necessary and more about the correct momentum.

Eligibility

We run a range of trials competitions, so all types of landrovers and drivers of any level of experience, from first timer to experienced, can come along and a great day’s landrovering.

Licenses and Permits

We are a registered ‘competitive club’ and organise events monthly. Running under the permits of Motorsport UK (formally MSA) and the rules of the Association of Land Rover Clubs, we offer trials for all levels of ability and Land Rover. Our ethos is to have fun and are a family club, running events for all our members to enjoy themselves and their landrovers. We provide full guidance and advice and everyone is welcome.

Off-road driving competition for all types of Land Rovers, which are road legal. Also known as an RTV Trial

Road Taxed Vehicle Trial, as the name suggests is for vehicles that are road legal. In the spirit of the regulations you are to drive your vehicle to and from the event (and be road legal both ways!). Over the years the RTV’s have got harder as some RTV drivers demand more. In response to this some clubs run Family Vehicle Trials (FVT) which is a half way house between a Tyro and RTV.

The RTV should be non-damaging if driven properly, although to see some competitors vehicles this is hard to believe. But, because there is always a ‘but’, some of our sites are not friendly to nice body work due to the fact they are wooded sites and it’s a well known fact that trees are harder than Land Rovers.

Vehicle regulations classify standard and modified Land Rovers , and now there is effectively a supper modified class called Q class which requires the following:
Class Q. A vehicle manufactured from Land Rover parts in accordance with MSA Regulations. Vehicles must retain Land Rover axles, engines and drivetrain. Vehicles must retain the appearance of a Land Rover.

RTV trials are open to any licensed driver over the age of 17 who must be a member of ELRC or any invited MSA recognized club. Any drivers not holding a full driving License must be passengered by a fully licensed and experienced RTV driving club member. Full driving licensed drivers may take a passenger aged 12 and above and a current member of the club, where the vehicle is fitted with a hard top or roll over protection, otherwise the minimum is 16 years. Current membership card is to be shown at signing on.

Additionally the event is open to junior drivers of road legal vehicles, where they have a passenger with a full RTA licence and experience of Cross Country Trials who are 16 or over, or aged 15 or over where they have finished at least four TYRO Trials. Proof of finishing four Tyro trials may be recorded on the Upgrade Card available from the competition secretary.

Any participant under the age of 18 must be endorsed by a parent/guardian.

Cross Country Vehicle Trials (CCV) – for roll cage equipped specials

These trials for vehicles with roll cages to ALRC standard and are significantly harder than an RTV event, and consequently have a higher risk of vehicle damage. As such most CCV vehicles are not road legal, and are towed to events.

CCV trials are open to any licensed driver over the age of 17 who must be a member of ELRC or any invited MSA recognized club. Any drivers not holding a full driving License must be passengered by a fully licensed and experienced CCV driving club member. Any participant under the age of 18 must be endorsed by a parent/guardian. Full driving licensed drivers may take a passenger aged 14 and above and a current member of the club. Current membership card is to be shown at signing on.

Additionally the event is open to young drivers driving a special vehicle (P44.1.3), who do not have a current valid RTA licence, where their Passenger holds such a licence and is experienced in Cross Country Trials. Drivers may be 16 or over provided they have finished at least four RTV trials, or aged 15 or over where they have finished at least four TYRO Trials and at least four RTV trials. Proof of finishing trials may be recorded on the Upgrade Card available from the competition secretary.

When entry numbers are low, ELRC sometimes run combined RTV and CCV events, using slightly different routes for each class.
