Trials
Likelihood of damage
In response to requests for a guide to what our events are all about, and whether you should enter and put your beloved vehicle at risk of a repair job or damage: let us assure you that we try to run a friendly family club with competition being on a low key basis, avoiding damage (unless caused by driver error).
It may be useful to set out briefly what happens at the various trials organised on your behalf, in the hope that more of you will come along and have ago, or be enrolled as marshals to help out and see what happens.
You have arrived at the trial for your first time. What do you do next?
Arrival
The most important thing a competitor (or marshal) does is SIGN ON.
This then covers you under MSA insurance for 3rd part liability insurance.
The competition secretary has the necessary forms to be filled in, for you to be able to compete for the day. His vehicle will be marked, (Signing On), so go to it and ask to sign on (either as a competitor or a marshal).
Please remember that without marshals, there would be no competitions.
Vehicle Scrutineering
For your own safety and others at the event, vehicles have to be checked before being allowed to compete.
Basic requirements FOR ALL TRIALS or EVENTS are a front and rear towing point, tow rope , a return spring on the last link of the carburettor to a fixed point (to enable the throttle to idle if the linkage is broken), and a secure battery.
As you progress to more competitive trials so the required modifications to the vehicle get longer and more detailed.
If you get stuck (and everybody will sometime), and don't have a front towing point, having your front bumper pulled off or out of shape can be expensive to fix.
The more experienced often get stuck attempting things that most other drivers would steer clear of.
If vehicles are not up to the scrutineer's standards for the trial ahead they will be refused to be allowed to compete until the recommended changes have been effected.
This is for everybody's safety and for INSURANCE purposes. An unsafe vehicle could injure its driver, passenger or a spectator.
Some sites are steep and having a loose hand brake is not a good idea.
